Cooperative Web Society

Over the last months I’ve been thinking about how I could use my theory of the Cooperative Web Society (kooperative Webgesellschaft) to interpret the current AI Revolution. I’m talking about four characteristics of the „Great Transformation“ from a mass society to a Web Society. What impacts does AI have on this?

1. Structural Change in the Public Sphere – From Mass Media to Fragmented Public Spheres

AI algorithms analyze user preferences to create personalized content. This fragmentation challenges traditional mass media, enabling individuals to access tailored information. AI-driven algorithms sometimes lead to filter bubbles, where individuals are exposed to information reinforcing their existing beliefs. This can create echo chambers, hindering a shared public discourse. On the other hand, AI tools empower individuals to participate in a dynamic, participatory space.

2. Dialectic of Center and Periphery in the World System – From Decision to Negotiation

AI facilitates global collaboration. Decision-making becomes more inclusive, involving diverse perspectives from various parts of the world. Predictive analytics and sentiment analysis provide insights, enhancing diplomatic strategies and negotiations. AI promotes networked governance models where decisions are made collectively, emphasizing negotiation and consensus-building over unilateral decision-making.

3. New Forms of Participation – From Representation to Direct Democracy

AI platforms enable direct interaction between citizens and governments. Chatbots and virtual assistants facilitate public inquiries, enhancing citizen engagement in governance processes. Blockchain technology, often used in conjunction with AI, ensures transparency and trust in the electoral process, promoting direct democracy. AI-driven simulations allow citizens to explore policy scenarios. This informed participation fosters a deeper understanding of policy implications, enabling more meaningful citizen input.

4. New Actors – From Collective Actors to Individuals in Plural Roles and New Actor-Network Constellations

AI empowers individuals to become content creators, entrepreneurs, and influencers. AI fosters collaborative networks where individuals, businesses, and organizations collaborate on projects. Crowdsourcing platforms leverage AI to creating dynamic actor-network constellations for problem-solving and innovation.

In summary, the AI revolution, as per my Web Society Theory, transforms the platform economy by decentralizing and personalizing services, addresses global challenges through interconnectedness and sustainability, and reshapes actor networks by redefining labor dynamics, promoting collaboration, and emphasizing ethics and regulations. Embracing these trends thoughtfully can lead to a more inclusive, sustainable, and innovative cooperative web society.
